When you hear the terms "bad lighting" "ugly lighting" "lackluster lights" "outdated home"...What do you think of?....No really....Close your eyes for about 10 seconds and reflect, then open your eyes.
Now let me take a guess...you pictured the orangey-yellow, extremely ornate chandelier in your parents or grandparents homes?!!!!
...BUT! What about the builder grade, uniform, and no character lighting in YOUR home?
Now this may come as a shocker to you, but the existing lights your builder or previous owner installed in your home are equally "lackluster", and most of all, may be dating your home, and causing your design attempts to fall flat.
Lighting is easily one of the first tasks I address when designing any space. Ranging from changing old light bulbs to longer lasting, and better light emitting LED bulbs to actually replacing the types of chandelier, sconce light, or pendant light in the space. Playing with the types of light emitted from your bulbs such as warm white, soft white, bright white, or day light is key depending on how much natural light is in your space. For example if you have few windows/a dark space, utilizing warm white lightbulbs can make the space feel warmer, darker, and even smaller.
Think of the functionality of your space....Think about how you want to feel... Think about what you want it to look like, when you walk into the space. Do a little shopping, and call an electrician to swap out those lights! If you're in doubt about making these selections yourself, I recommend consulting with an interior designer (that truly understands your vision) to help you select the perfect lights for your space. You would be amazed how quickly a space transforms with the right lighting!
